Its that season again, the one where you drive down the street and the spaces between the sidewalk and the street are no longer green, but red, white and blue. Ad campaign are everywhere this time of the year, but imagine instead of seeing your usual boring political candidates on the signs you saw yeezus….. yes that is correct Kanye has officially announced that he is running for president at the mtv awards and has the super pac and videos to prove it.
Before I read this article I could not believe what I was reading until I found his campaign videos. The next thing I did in that moment was search his name in twitter and sure enough everyone was talking about it and there were endless links to his videos. This example shows you how powerful of an advertising tool media is. By the time kanye announced his running, that all your twitter timeline would be about. In other words he was trending that night.
But just like me know one could believe it was true until they saw his campaign videos. nowadays forms of media can be hard evidence to validate the truth. If you hear about something and want to validate it you would go on a social media site to see what others have to say. This is very accurate because a couple days ago a upcoming rapper was riding his motorcycle and got his by a car and no one knew if it was a hoax or not until you looked for pictures and tweets about the event.
I personally think this can be an issue because we are relying on everyday people for our news and gossip. In the past people would get their news from qualified and credible sources such as the newspaper or news channels, but now we rely on our friends retweets and whatever is trending. This is an issue because of how gossip can so easily get out of control and turn into rumors and soon millions can be mislead by an incredible source within hours.
The way to avoid this is to follow credible and verified twitter accounts owned by news stations and papers. So before you click that app and scream because “Barack Obama Is in Naperville” make sure to double check yours sources
