chi-raq, spike-lees interpretation of a typical chicago ghetto with a twist of an acient greek play. Sounds like a fun idea by a reputable director. Think again. Chicagoans are in a n uproar about this movie, saying it does not represent us correctly. Chicagoans are taking this movie very personally because they have deep roots in their homeland, place they grew up. They don't want this to be misrepresented. Another pressing issue is the main character is played by nick cannon which does not have any chicago root
Even celebrities with chicago roots are protesting on social media such as twitter. I personally do alot of work with hip-hop artists and they all have to say the same thing. Chi-raq puts a bad rep on the chicago community, generalizing and stereotyping us. One man I know is so passionate about the subject that he hired me to make a highlight video on all the good that chicago has to offer.
I personally think that the movie is correct about what is going on in chicago, but I think they should have went about it in a more sensitive way, instead of in almost a joking way, because this is a sensitive issue. Spike lee did have a good idea but he should have put out an actual documentary that meant something rather than a musical movie on such a pressing issue.
I think they should have used a cast with deep roots in chicago to really put a personal touch on the movie, I think that would have been popular. If he had made directed the movie as more of an informational one rather than focusing more on the entertainment portion then I think people would take it more seriously.
This applies to media because of the fact that this movie has been talked about in a contraversial way on all forms of media. Including radio, social media, tv and even newspapers. Imaging wanting there to be change and publicity on the issue but it being totally misrepresented as almost a joke. Its kind of offensive right? Well that is what the chicago community thinks
